Ministry to Fund Research on Air Quality in Haifa, Alternative Fuels, and More

Calls for proposals for research and surveys on five environmental issues of critical importance to Israel have been published. The Ministry of Environmental Protection (MoEP) has announced that it will award up to NIS 20.4 million for research related to: the link between air quality in Haifa Bay and morbidity, the impact of pollution on the environment and different ecosystems in Haifa Bay, alternative fuels for transportation, the 2014 oil spill in the Evrona Nature Reserve in southern Israel, and green building. The calls for proposals are the result of different government resolutions on the various issues.

Calls for Proposals: Haifa Bay Air Quality

​The MoEP is calling for proposals on two issues related to air quality in Haifa Bay.

1. Aim: Examine the relationship between different elements and different levels of air pollution in Haifa Bay, and incidences of various diseases in different population groups and different neighborhoods.

Amount: NIS 9 million

2. Aim: Broaden the base of information about the impact of environmental pollution on the environment and ecosystems in the Haifa Bay region.

Both objectives relate to Govt. Decision No. 529, regarding the National Plan to Reduce Air Pollution and Environmental Risks in Haifa Bay.

Calls for Proposals: Alternative Fuels for Transportation

Aim: Study environmental aspects of alternative fuels for transportation. These may include efficient use of resources, environmental impact of production facilities, storage, distribution of alternative fuels, regulation and standardization of alternative fuels, and more.

Amount: NIS 3.4 million

Related Government Decision: No. 2790, regarding the National Plan for the Development of Technologies that Reduce the Global Use of Oil for Transportation and to Strengthen the Knowledge of High-Tech Industries in the Field of Alternative Fuels

Calls for Proposals: Evrona Oil Spill

​​Aim: Conduct environmental monitoring activities outside of the Evrona Nature Reserve, where a December 2014 oil spill did major damage to flora, fauna, and the soil. Also, research the long-term effects of the oil spill on the region.

Amount: NIS 2 million

Calls for Proposals: Green Building

​​Aim: To widen the knowledge base about green building, especially for the formulation of MoEP policy and to set agreed-upon preferred actions in the field. Topics can include: the adoption of green building principles by conventional builders in Israel, implementation of the green building standards, models, management of joint housing, and more.

Amount: NIS 1 million

Related Government Decision: No. 1806, regarding the promotion of green building.
