Birch, former Commander of the home front command, Commander of the headquarters and military Secretary to the Premier and Minister of Defense, passed away at the age of 68. Most recently, he served as the IDF Attaché in the u.s.

Major General (Res.) Ze’ev livne, the first Commander in Chief of the home front command, went today (Tuesday) died at the age of 68.

Born in the USSR in 1947 and immigrated to Israel. He enlisted in the army in 1962 and volunteered to parachute battalion Nahal Brigade paratroopers. He later served as Commander of a platoon in the Regiment, regimental operations officer and company commander. He was wounded in the fighting in the Golan Heights during the six-day war, when he served as battalion operations officer look.

He fought in the first Lebanon war in 1982, as Deputy Commander of “Verdi” who fought in the eastern sector. In 1989 he was appointed Assistant head for the Operations Directorate of the General staff, a post he retained until after the Gulf war. In 1992 he was appointed the first Commander of the home front command, with the establishment.
Two years later was appointed commander of forces command, until 1996 it was appointed military Secretary to the Prime Minister. Most recently, he served as the IDF Attaché in the United States and Canada, until his retirement in 2001.

Birch was survived by his wife Denise and four children.
