The Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee unanimously approved on Tuesday the House Committees recommendation to appoint MK Avi Dichter (Likud) as its chairman. Dichter is replacing MK Tzachi Hanegbi (Likud), who was sworn in as a Minister without Portfolio during Monday`s plenary session. Hanegbi headed the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee during the 17th, 18th and 20th Knessets.
Knesset Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein thanked Hanegbi for heading the committee and said, ”Here the meetings are held behind closed doors, and [the committee members] do not seek respect or headlines. Rather, they engage in [very important] work far away from the spotlight.”
Edelstein said Dichter was the obvious choice to replace Hanegbi, ”having served his entire life in the most sensitive places.”
”I hope your term in the committee will be as boring as possible, because this is what the entire Israeli nation wishes for,” the Knesset Speaker told Dichter.
MK Mordhay Yogev (Habayit HaYehudi) congratulated Dichter and said, ”The challenges are great, and despite the Knesset Speaker`s prayer, it will not be boring in Israel.”
Dichter, a former director of the Shin Bet internal security agency, served in the past as Minister of Public Security and Minister of Home Front Defense.
