”The Jewish people all over the world bids farewell this evening with great sadness to Elie Wiesel, one of the central Jewish figures in the last century,” Knesset Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein said following the passing on Saturday of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, venerated Auschwitz survivor, human rights activist, journalist and author at age 87.

”Wiesel justly earned great admiration, as one that brought glory to the name of the Jewish people, and that from his personal suffering demonstrated his uniqueness and strength,” Edelstein said in a statement.

”I am also bidding farewell to a personal friend who I loved and learned from a lot. There is no doubt that his philosophy and intellectual and moral contribution will resonate for years to come.”
